I’m writing this post from The Loft, Virgin America’s lounge at LAX Terminal 3 on the night of May 10th. Tonight is the last night for this lounge to be open, and I happen to be flying into LAX this evening. Normally I would go directly from the airport to my go-to hotel at LAX, The Hyatt Regency. But since the club is closing I decided to stop by and pay one final visit, on the final evening of, Virgin America’s only lounge.
After arriving at LAX we checked in for our returning Virgin America flight and proceeded to security. Both Susan and I had pre-check for this flight and within a few minutes had passed the security check point and were in Terminal 3.
Being based out of a secondary market like Sacramento means that you usually are going to connect to wherever you’re going. There are a handful of directs, but at the end of the day it’s a connection (or two) for most of your travels. One of my favorite airports to connect through is Los Angeles International Airport. People love to hate LAX, but in my twisted view of reality I enjoy the sea of humanity that is constantly trying to get into and out of the iconic location.
One of my favorite tricks is to overnight at this airport when flying a transcontinental to the east coast. I’ll typically come in the evening before and try to get out early the next day. This gives me a few things. A rested evening before a day of travel. An earlier arrival into the east coast. The chance to enjoy a true business class seat when traveling across the county. An opportunity to pick up a Hyatt stay toward my Diamond status. All wins again in my twisted view.
Our flight from SMF we arrived at gate 68 terminal 6. Our departure was gate 51B in terminal 5. Also we had arrived 30 minutes later than scheduled on the SMF leg, so there wasn’t time for a lounge visit and I needed to head directly to gate 51B. When making connections between terminal 5 and 6, travelers need to access an underground tunnel airside between the terminals.
Sacramento Parking Garage level 3
I arrived to the Sacramento Metro Field airport early on a chilly New Year’s Eve day and parked in the airports only parking garage.
